Elk Hill helps kids and families find the courage to change

History of Elk Hill

Boy flying kite

S. Buford Scott and his family donated land in Goochland County 40 years ago to start Elk Hill. Back then we were a home for troubled boys. We gave these boys a safe place to live, ensured their education, and taught them how to get along with others.

We’ve really grown a lot since then, especially in the past several years. We’re still the place where boys can get a second chance, and we’ve been helping girls since 1999. We run alternative schools and summer camps as well. And we’re getting involved with kids and families earlier – right after that first foster-care placement or school suspension. We want to keep families together and help kids stay in school and out of trouble.

When everyone else sees problems, Elk Hill finds potential and possibility.

The generous support from donors over the years has helped Elk Hill become all that it is today. The collaborative effort from referring agencies such as local FAPT teams, social services, school districts, court services units, community services boards, and concerned parents and professionals has ensured that children at-risk get the help they need from Elk Hill.

On behalf of the children and families we serve, thank you!

Mission Statement

Elk Hill provides and facilitates healthy environments where young people and their families can feel safe to make positive changes. Through specialized education, community based services and residential treatment programs, these children – supported by their families - are able to discover the academic, vocational, behavioral, and life skills necessary to re-direct their troubled lives.
