Elk Hill- Harambee Day School

Elk Hill- Varina

Day School

The Day School Programs

Respect, Responsibility, Hard Work, & Education

Established in 1992 on our Goochland campus, the Harambee Day School serves young men and women, ages 11 to 18, from central Virginia who cannot be educated within their public schools' traditional special education program. The program was named the Harambee School by the students; Harambee is a Swahili word meaning pulling together for the greater good.  The success of the Harambee School led to the opening Elk Hill-Varina day school in February 1999 to serve serve the young men and women in Eastern Henrico area and surrounding counties. The young men and women in the Harambee and Varina Schools live at home while attending Elk Hill during the day in a program similar in design to the Residential Program model.  Both schools are certified to operate as special education schools by the Virginia Department of Education and accredited by VAISEF.

Aftercare helps provide the successful reintegration of students into their community schools through advocacy and counseling services. Aftercare includes individual counseling, crisis intervention, mentoring, in-home counseling, employment assistance, drug and alcohol counseling, health and sex education, and social/recreational activities.
