Measuring
Our Success

Elk
Hill has been documenting the changes in the lives of its graduates
through continuing personal relationships and statistical tracking.
Dr. George Giacobbe, a professor of special education, has developed
an independent model index rate for determining the success of residential
treatment programs. Using Elk Hill's statistics from back to 1981,
Dr. Giacobbe determined that Elk Hill had maintained “a success
rate index of 81% in its treatment of troubled youth.” (Elk Hill:
A Successful Residential Treatment for Young Men, by Dr. George
A. Giacobbe, Elaine Traynelis-Yurek, G&T Press, 1993, updated
June, 2001.) Dr. Giacobbe updates his study on a regular basis using
data that is collected annually at Elk Hill. Another study,
from June 1997 to June 2001, showed a success rate of 83%.
As of August 2006, the success rate index has increased to 85%*
at the Elk Hill Residential Program.
In addition ,
using the criteria developed by the National Council on Crime and
Delinquency, the 1996 most recent study by Virginia Joint Legislative
Audit and Review Committee found Elk Hill's success rate treating
young men coming from the Department of Juvenile Justice to be, “considerable
higher than the rates found for other treatment settings, including
other private sites,” which JLARC attributes to the frequent and personal
contact offered in our structured educational and treatment programs.
Elk
Hill offers a unique continuum of programs to young men and women
who have the courage and optimism to take advantage of the opportunity
to redirect their lives. Individual families are personally touched
by Elk Hill Farm, but all Virginia communities benefit as Elk Hill
provides solutions to the growing problems with America’s
youth.
*Based
on 25 years of research by Dr George Giacobbi, Ph.D. The
Success Rate Index measures the amount of time a graduate of Elk
Hill spends in a less restrictive living situation after leaving
Elk Hill Farm.
“It
is gratifying to see so many young men, particularly those who have
been away from Elk Hill for several years, who have pieced together
an existence that puts them at a much better place (e.g., independent
living or dependant living) today then where they might have been
had they gone the way of their original life trajectory. It is obvious
from the data that Elk Hill Farm is helping many young men to find
a path to a better life.”
